The popularity of online gaming is increasing rapidly and
this year has seen significant growth in Europe and in Asia. It is estimated
that online Casino revenue will increase between $6-$10 Billion Dollars in the
next 12 months and reach a staggering $20 Billion by 2005.
Jan 20 2003: Silicon.com reports that online gaming is more
popular than Internet shopping in Asia. This is according to a recent IDC survey
of more than 3,600 Net users across six Asian countries.
In China and Malaysia, there are twice as many online gamers
as there are Internet shoppers. Around 43 percent of Chinese Internet users play
games online, while just 16 percent report that they shop via the Net. This is
hardly surprising when you consider there are an estimated 54-Million gamblers
in China alone. Of the six countries surveyed, India showed the lowest
penetration of Net use with just 15 percent reporting that they played games
online, while only 13 percent stated that they shopped via the Web.
Feb 24 2003: New research from Nielsen-Netratings reveals
that 5.9 million Europeans visited online gaming sites in January 2003. This is
more than double the 2.8 million surfers who visited websites in this sector in
January 2002.
According to the study, the leading European markets for
online gaming are Spain, UK, Germany and France. Nielsen-Netratings attributes
the dramatic rise in online gamers to an increased uptake of broadband
connections in Europe and improvements in gaming technology.
May14 2003: New research suggests Britons are among Europe's
keenest online gamers. NetValue found 3.5 million people in the UK visited
online gaming sites in March. The figure shows an increase of a million from the
previous year and represents 22% of the online population.
Nearly a quarter of all web users in Spain accessed games
site putting it at the top of the European list. The UK was second, France came
third, with Denmark fourth, Germany fifth, Norway sixth, Sweden seventh and
Italy came eighth with around 10% of web users visiting gaming sites.
